The Director of Individual Giving is an exciting, new opportunity to create and manage a robust individual philanthropy program that supports the expansion of housing and services for homeless and at-risk veterans across the nation. The Director serves as a member of U.S.VETS’ national development team, and works directly with the Vice President, Development & Communications to support and expand the philanthropic engagement of individuals across the country. Successful candidates will be experienced in building new fundraising programs, metrics-driven, and eager to lead and mentor colleagues and volunteer leadership. The position works in close collaboration with national development and communications team, as well as regional Executive Directors, Development Managers and other U.S.VETS staff to expand individual giving for annual operations, new capital campaigns and endowment, at both the national and local level. Specific responsibilities: Builds, oversees and develops strategies to achieve individual philanthropy goals across U.S.VETS, including at regional sites, through major gifts, annual fund and planned giving programs. Develop and maintain a portfolio of high-level donors and prospects, which currently totals $800K+; directly solicit major gifts from $5K-$100K+; support regional development staff and executive directors in gift solicitation. Manage national direct marketing campaign, develop print and digital solicitation materials, write quarterly appeals; responsible for creation, production, mailing, analytics and acquisition strategy. Actively produce written proposals, requests, appeals, case development, campaign materials and others donor-centric communications, in close partnership with Communications staff. Develop and implement a planned giving program: identify and cultivate prospects, initiate gift discussions, create marketing and stewardship plan, engage allied professionals, facilitate necessary administration for structured gift options including bequests, donor advised funds, charitable trusts. Participate in capital campaign development, coordination and solicitation for extensive new building and renovation projects nationally; support site staff in securing $50K-$1M capital gifts. Partner with senior leadership, Advisory Council, and Board, deploying them as necessary to cultivate and solicit gifts, steward current donors, host major donor events and other such activities. Lead donor cultivation and stewardship to promote a culture of gratitude among internal and external constituents, develop process, templates for stewardship, engagement, acknowledgment. Work with national development team, site leadership and development staff to develop and support regional fundraising plans, revenue goals and strategies for individual philanthropy. Develops and implements systems to track performance metrics and increase pipeline development, including strategic use of research, database and tools. Utilize donor research tools to support meeting preparation and strategic solicitation. Effectively communicate regional needs, build strong relationships with site Executive Directors, Development & Communications Managers, and other staff to understand and meet site needs. Develop and manage relationships with key stakeholders, including national executives and development team, and staff at each site by providing responsive, high-quality customer service. Maintain relevant information on prospects and donors including deadlines, contact information, action steps and other relevant data in U.S.VETS constituent management database. Qualifications Education/Experience/Skills: Bachelor’s degree required. The ideal candidate will have: 5-7 years of relevant experience in fundraising, major gifts, membership or alumni management. Demonstrated success in soliciting and acquiring five and six-figure gifts in a nonprofit setting. Proven skills in moves management, and creation of strategies to sustain and increase investment. Excellent communication, project management, customer service, and interpersonal skills; persuasive writing and presentation style. Ability to manage multiple priorities, work in a deadline- driven environment and manage complex projects while maintaining attention to detail. Ability to work effectively with and build consensus among diverse internal stakeholders. Comfort working independently and as a team, ability to lead both direct and indirect reports. Proficiency in Microsoft Office required. Raiser’s Edge experience preferred. Flexibility to work some evenings as well as occasional travel. High levels of integrity, flexibility, strategic thinking and humor are necessary, along with the creativity and persistence required to elicit new thinking and change.
