Job Description

Position Summary (Intent and purpose of the role)

Reporting to the Director of Education, the Director of K-College Programs is responsible for imagining and directing educational initiatives and programs that encourage engagement among educators, students, and the Museum. This role will oversee a team of professional staff responsible for carrying out the vision of the Education Department at the Museum and digitally. This position is responsible for: developing an innovative program roster that inspires 21st century teachers and students to imagine and create; articulating the scope of programming and desired outcomes; and building effective partnerships in order to ensure the Museum is at the forefront of shaping innovative museum education practices for these key audiences.

Primary Responsibilities & Accountabilities (Key duties or essential priorities for fulfilling the job’s purpose)

Museum Pre-Opening Activities

  • Develops and implements pre-opening program slate, including content development; assessment tools; staffing; brokering partnerships; reporting to stakeholders;
  • Works with community groups to provide educational experiences in partnership with other arts, cultural, educational, and civic organizations at the Museum or off-site;

K – College Strategy, Planning, & Implementation

  • Determines program structures for opening year and beyond (3 years); develops training plans and partnerships;
  • Creates an education and evaluation plan that is geared towards different types of learners and learning experiences;
  • Develops and implements school and teacher programs to ensure that the museum provides curriculum- and standards-based, child-centered art education to pre-K through College school groups;
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates outreach strategies to promote the Museum's educational visitation and programs;
  • Researches, develops, and implements collateral materials for the Museum's education audiences, programs and educator training;

Staff and Team Management

  • Hires, trains, develops, and evaluates staff effectively. Takes corrective action as necessary on a timely basis and in accordance with Museum policy;
  • Evaluates the team plan for continual improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the group;
  • Provides individuals on the team with professional growth opportunities;

Special projects and other duties as designated by Director of Education or assigned designee.

REQUIREMENTS

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree is required;
  • Masters of Arts in related field (Museum Studies, Anthropology, Visual Arts, Film, English) is preferred;
  • A minimum of seven (7) years experience in an art museum or creative space is required;
  • Demonstrated record for creating innovative programming that extends beyond a standards-based approach;

Skills

  • Effective supervising and team building;
  • Collaborating on various size projects;
  • Ability to develop evaluation rubrics and produce reports;
  • Effectively communicates, internally and externally, in order to build consensus and move projects forward;
  • Capacity to balance pre-opening projects and forward planning for inaugural program slate;

Knowledge

  • Understands K-12 education landscape (State and National) and recognizes opportunities to positively impact students and teachers;
  • Fluency with socio-emotional learning theory and 21st Century Skills and Learning;
  • Recognizes the opportunities that museums afford diverse teens and college students; familiar with the national programming and research in this area and appreciates how the Museum can build a pipeline for diversity in the museum field and creative industry;
  • Familiarity with the challenges and opportunities in collaborating with high needs school communities;

Abilities

  • Tracks details related to program implementation, including: partner communications, contracts, recruitment, site selection, budget;
  • Effective delegation to subordinate staff and contractors in order to fulfill program aspirations;
  • Ability to develop assessment tools to measure program impact and communicate outcomes effectively;
  • Manages time effectively in order to maximize pre-opening programming, learning, and reporting.
