Job Description

Position Objective:

To maximize media coverage for PETA's campaigns


Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

• Guide the Communications Department staff in various duties relating to the media, including media lists, press plans, writing news releases, and interactions with news media

• Independently pitch PETA campaigns and events to the media

• Develop different angles with which to approach local and national bloggers, reporters, and other media

• Keep informed of PETA's campaigns and generate media coverage for serious pitches, events, ads, staff profiles, victories, investigations, and more

• Keep informed of local and national columnists at papers, magazines, wires, and websites

• Develop and maintain relationships with members of the media and select online reporters and maintain PETA's list of national media contacts

• Write and edit advisories, pitches, and news releases

• Work with senior PETA staff to create pitch plans

• Represent the organization to the media

• Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor



• Degree in a related field or equivalent experience

• Minimum of 5 years of media relations experience

• Demonstrated extensive knowledge of the media industry

• Excellent working knowledge of print, broadcast, and online media outlets

• Thorough knowledge of animal rights issues and PETA campaigns

• Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships and deal with a variety of people in a professional manner

• Proven exceptional written and verbal communication skills

• Proven excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

• Proven ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines

• Professional appearance and adherence to a healthy vegan lifestyle

• Support for PETA's philosophy and the ability to advocate PETA's positions professionally

• Commitment to the objectives of the organization
