Job Description

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking a Media and Lighting Technician for our Exhibits Department.  Primary responsibilities include installation and maintenance of audiovisual and lighting equipment and software in exhibits, assistance in planning and development of audiovisual and lighting components of exhibits, and maintenance and organization of equipment storage spaces.  There are regular full-time and temporary full-time positions available.
Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

Installation, deinstallation, programming, maintenance, and troubleshooting of audiovisual and lighting equipment, supplies, systems, and software for Museum exhibits and displays

Creation and editing of media for Museum exhibits and displays

Building and testing of prototypes or proofs-of-concept for Museum exhibits and displays

Research on equipment, materials, and software for implementation in Museum exhibits and displays

Communication with vendors and ordering of equipment, materials, and software

Creation and maintenance of equipment lists and budgets for projects

Inventory and organization of storage spaces for audiovisual and lighting equipment

This position has the following requirements:

One or more years of professional experience in implementing and maintaining audiovisual systems for Museum exhibits, or in related fields

One or more years of professional experience in lighting for Museum exhibits, or in related fields

Familiarity with multiple computer operating systems

Proficiency with Museum and theatrical lighting equipment (e.g. track lighting systems, PAR cans, ellipsoidals, filters, gobos, lenses, dimming systems)

Proficiency with Museum and theatrical audiovisual equipment (e.g. show controllers, video projectors, touchmonitors, video players, extenders, P. A. systems, computers, microcontrollers)

Basic electronic and electrical skills (e.g. soldering, wiring, testing cables and electronic components)

Proficiency with a variety of media- and design-related software (e.g. Photoshop, Digital Performer, Flash, After Effects, AutoCAD)

Proficiency with basic Microsoft software (e.g. Word, Excel)

Familiarity with one or more programming languages

Competent in reading and interpreting blueprints, electrical drawings, and schematics

Willingness and aptitude to learn additional skills, equipment, software, programming languages, and operating systems as needed

Use of scissor lift and boom lift, electrical and electronic tools and equipment, carpentry tools and equipment, metal shop tools and equipment, paint shop tools and equipment

Ability to stand, climb, and stoop for extended periods of time

Ability to work at heights and in conditions of low lighting

Ability to work on a flexible schedule, with evenings, early mornings, weekends, and overtime when necessary for the completion of time-sensitive projects and work that cannot be done during Museum public hours

Ability to thoroughly and systematically troubleshoot complex systems and solve problems

Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with curators, designers, project managers, exhibit technicians, and other Museum staff and contractors, and to follow established Museum protocols, particularly when working with or around Museum collections
