Finance Foundations

Job Description

The Senior Accountant is primarily responsible for all aspects of day-to-day accounting for the Foundation and two Trusts. This position reports to the Director of Finance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

General Ledger

  • Monthly posting of purchase and sale transactions for all investment accounts and posting of monthly closing accruals
  • Reconcile trading, cash movement and other investment-related activity to custodian records, ensuring any discrepancies are documented, researched and resolved promptly
  • Review redemption agreements to prepare accrual entries for Foundation and two Cruts
  • Prepare all monthly general journal entries for grants and other accounts and post to the general ledger
  • Reconcile and analyze trial balance accounts monthly, and promptly research and correct any variances

Cash

  • Record bank account transfers for Foundation and two Trusts
  • Perform account transfers including funding of capital calls and payment of manager fees
  • Review and post all daily cash receipt and transfers
  • Prepare daily reconciliation of cash balances

Financial Reporting

  • Prepare accurate investment accounting and financial reporting of invested assets
  • Prepare quarterly and annual financial statements for Foundation and two Trusts
  • Maintain books and records in accordance with department policies and procedures and GAAP
  • Prepare quarterly cash flow statements for Foundation and two Trusts
  • Identify exceptions and problems affecting accounting records, communicate same to management and assist in their resolution
  • Assist in preparing audit and tax schedules and compliance reports
  • Prepare annual surveys for Federal reporting
  • Participate in special projects, including process improvements and internal control evaluations
  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of the accounting systems
  • Undertake projects and other duties as assigned

Investments

  • Partner with Investment Operations to review the computations and performance and benchmark calculations for reasonableness
  • Review investment manager reports/statements for propriety and reconcile data to custodian reports. This includes monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements including non-GAAP and those in foreign currency
  • Analyze derivative activity for proper financial reporting and identify controls to ensure accuracy of reporting
  • Manage the design, implementation and maintenance of financial systems to support analysis and proper reporting of alternative investments -
  • Develop and implement best practices surrounding investment financial accounting through interaction and relationships with peer foundations
  • Review the data reconciliation of manager statements performed by the investment operation manager to assess impact on the Custodian records and propose adjustments as deemed necessary
  • Assist with the preparation of the 990PF related to investments for the Foundation and Trusts
  • Assist with the preparation of the 990-T and state tax returns including the analysis of unrelated business income tax for the Foundation and Trusts
  • Ensure compliance with all foreign disclosure and reporting requirements related to investments for the Foundation and Trusts
  • Ensure all partnership K-1’s and audited financial statements are received and analyzed for accuracy and completeness
  • Manage tax and cost basis tracking for investments ensuring accuracy
  • Review information in Intacct ensuring investment journal entries are accurately prepared and reports are electronically maintained
  • Review of investment portfolio performance for the purpose of determining investment staff incentive pay
  • Evaluate accuracy of 12/31 investment balances using manager reports received subsequent to the balance sheet date and investigate differences to ensure year end balances are accurate
  • Ensure accuracy of the Investment footnotes for the annual audit of the financial statements for the Foundation and the Trust including the Fair Value Hierarchy reporting (Topic 820)
  • Ensure Data Integrity through the development and implementation of policies and procedures surrounding the management

CORE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
  • 2 – 5 years related work experience
  • Public accounting / Big 4 CPA experience preferred
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of complex Investment accounts
  • Knowledge of Trust Accounting a plus
  • Intermediate knowledge of GAAP and FASB regulations
  • Strong knowledge of accounting concepts and current accounting principles
  • Analytical, quantitative and organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication including the ability to effectively present information in a clear, concise manner
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of reliability, accuracy and productivity
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to quickly grasp issues and understand strategy
  • Adept at working with management to influence/facilitate change, implement strategy and accomplish objectives
  • Interpersonal relations: particularly tact, sensitivity, professionalism, confidentiality and diplomacy
  • The ability to work well under pressure and balance multiple priorities with a drive to achieve results and deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and to use good judgment in decision-making
  • Strong proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Ability to work in multiple accounting systems
  • Martus, Nexonia and Intacct experience preferred
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Capacity to quickly develop an understanding of the Foundation and Trusts’ programs, strategies, and initiatives, the organization mission, philosophies, structure, values, program direction, niche and policies
  • Strong quantitative, statistical and analytical skills
  • High aptitude for system and data management and math concepts used in accounting and statistics
