Founded in 1908, St. Barnabas Senior Services (SBSS) is a nonsectarian, nonprofit organization providing and promoting a continuum of innovative services that empower a diverse community of elders to live well, feel well, and age well with dignity and respect.
As the oldest senior service agency in LA, SBSS has evolved to become a leader in three core areas: as a provider of direct services to older adults; as an advocate for the improved welfare of older adults; as a thought leader and catalyst in the domain of educational programs about aging. The agency has also grown from operating a single senior center in Mid-City to a providing innovative services in Hollywood and Echo Park as well.
WHO THE AGENCY SERVES
Typically, SBSS participants are in their mid-70s, live alone, have few relatives or friends to provide assistance, and speak minimal English. These participants roughly match the demographic profile of this geographic area: 35% Asian, 33% Latino, 25% White, 6% African/American, 1% Other. Most depend on Social Security of $800-$900 per month to cover their expenses and rely on Medicare and Medicaid for their health coverage. Living at or below the federal poverty level, they lack the resources to meet their basic food, housing, and healthcare needs.
THE AGENCY’S IMPACT
Comprehensive programming promotes healthy and holistic aging, prolongs independence, and enhances the dignity and overall quality of life for over 18,000 older adults annually.
In a typical year the agency serves over 295,000 meals, provides over 9,000 hours of case management, more than 12,000 transportation rides, nearly 300 advocacy and public policy engagements, and over 2,000 wellness classes and activities.
SBSS provides services at various locations throughout Los Angeles County, including 3 senior centers, 14 community meal sites, and numerous senior housing complexes and community facilities.
In every location, program, and activity, SBSS strives to create a vibrant and nurturing community for older adults, their caregivers, and their families.
The current Chief Executive Officer will be stepping down in December 2021. Accordingly, Shirley Associates has been retained to assist the board in their search for a new CEO. The new CEO will have the benefit of joining an organization that is in very sound fiscal health and is recognized as a provider of high-quality senior services. The organization’s annual operating budget is c. $5 million.
The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for the successful leadership and management of the organization according to the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors. S/he is responsible for the overall management and supervision of agency operations, including administration, programs, human resources, finances, fundraising and community relations. A large part of the role is centered on raising the organization’s visibility, building strong ties to funding sources and developing robust senior social services, mobility and nutritional programs that address the needs of a broad spectrum of elderly residents residing in Los Angeles.
The CEO directly supervises an executive team of five seasoned professionals: a Director of Business Operations, a Director of Finance, a Director of Administration, a Director of Development, and a Government Affairs specialist, who collectively manage a staff of about 65 employees. An important part of the job is guiding and supporting the Board of Directors in their efforts to help the organization grow, while working to raise the organization’s profile in the Southern California and increase funding from public as well as private sources.
Specifically, the successful candidate will accomplish the following:

Human resources planning and management
Financial planning, Fundraising and management
Community and government relations/advocacy
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The new Chief Executive Officer will be a highly motivated and visionary leader, as well as a seasoned board relations administrator, program developer and a capable and effective fundraiser. He/she should be highly dedicated to the SBSS mission. A background serving the aging community will be highly desirable for someone taking on this role. We will however also consider nonprofit executives with experience centered on serving disadvantaged citizens through the provision of supportive services, such as case management, transportation, meals and similar educational activities. The strongest candidate will be familiar with the Los Angeles County and California State aging and welfare funding organizations and philanthropists.
