Job Description

The Assistant Controller has the essential role of ensuring timely and accurate reporting of financial information, free from material misstatement. The Assistant Controller will work to improve processes and tools to produce actionable, timely and accurate financial statements. Green Dot’s accounting department is entering an exciting era of growth and seeks a dynamic individual who enjoys the challenge of charting the path for the future.  

 RESPONSIBILITIES

> Be an active leader in implementing an ERP finance system

> Lead the team to close the books timely

> Motivate the general ledger accounting team in achieving their full potential

> Oversee the planning, scheduling and work related to the financial audit

> Ensure the financial statement audit is completed on time

> Ensure the financials are free from material misstatement by performing quality control processes in coordination with the Finance department

> Report financial results to our authorizers, for example, report unaudited actuals to Los Angeles Unified School District, first and second interim financial results

> Report budgets to our authorizers

> Submit Sales and Use tax returns

> Ensure accountants analyze all balance sheet accounts monthly

> Oversee the planning, scheduling, and participation in school-site audit visits

> Prepare annual information tax returns for review and approval

> Act as a thought-partner in designing reports and general ledger to support national expansion and consolidation

> Review and post journal entries

> Create new general ledger accounts and ensure they are consistent with financial reporting requirements, and appear in financial reports

> Ensure the mechanics of financial reports, both internal and external, are working correctly so that all accounts are corrected reported in financial reports

> Design new report templates to ease administrative burden of producing financial information in a variety of formats

> Work with schools, departments, and accountants to ensure compliance with internal controls

> Ensure internal controls are adequate and revise as necessary, ensuring we keep all dollars at the school sites

> Periodically revise accounting processes to improve efficiency and accuracy

> Special projects and other duties as assigned

> Some travel is required

Key Performance Indicators/Goals

> We have high standards because our goal is to ensure our schools have the best information as soon as possible, so that they can make the necessary decisions to change outcomes for impoverished students

> 100% deadlines met to ensure books are closed on time and provided to school sites in a timely manner

> A minimal number of journal entries are made after the books are closed each month

> 100% of checklist competed on-time each month

> 100% General Ledger Workbook updated each month

> 100% of issues solved as a percent of issues identified each month

 QUALIFICATIONS

> CPA is highly preferred

> Multi-state experience highly preferred

> Experience with federal audits is a plus

> You have a minimum of 6 years of work experience, including 3-4 years in general accounting - non-profit experience is highly preferred 

> You have demonstrated leadership managing teams

> You have a positive attitude that is infectious

> You enjoy building relationships with colleagues at all levels

> You have knowledge and/or interest in charter school operations - federal/state funding regulations is a plus

> You are detail-oriented, efficient and accurate

> You have the flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment

> You have a desire to work an education reform organization

> You are able to simultaneously manage multiple projects while maintaining a firm grasp of individual project details

> You have a high level of personal responsibility and drive towards ambitious goals

> You have a familiarity with and willingness to learn about and utilize technology to improve communication, collaboration, and productivity

> You have a strong sense of integrity, ethics, and drive to achieve and grow

> You are dependable, humble, have a sense of humor and a rock-solid commitment to Green Dot’s mission and the communities we serve

> You have a valid CA driver’s license

> You will need to pass a TB test and background check at time of offer
