Job Description

The Smidt Foundation is a private foundation created by Eric Smidt, the cofounder and CEO of Harbor Freight Tools, the family-owned national retailer. The foundation builds upon the Smidt family’s longstanding commitment to give back to their home town and to advance our country’s future as one of opportunity and care for all.

The Program Assistant is a pivotal member of a small, entrepreneurial team, contributing to idea generation, strategic thinking, and the foundation’s outreach and research.  The Program Assistant will be responsible for developing a deep understanding of the landscape of like-minded funders, performing due diligence program and financial research and analysis, constructing recommendations for engagement, considering and sharing opportunities to “invest or invent” in the community, and supporting the Managing Director in outreach, communication and tracking philanthropic efforts.

In addition, the Program Assistant will continue the development of in-depth knowledge of the skilled trades education ecosystem and support for the foundation's flagship program, Harbor Freight Tools for Schools, and its priorities. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Undertakes research assignments in fields of interest to the foundation
  • Prepares written reviews, analyses and a variety of communications pieces including reports, digital content, meeting summaries, etc.
  • Conducts site visits and interviews, participating in and supporting related meetings and study sessions
  • Prepares detailed reports and prepares financial analyses of proposals
  • Assists in planning and running convened gatherings
  • Represents the foundation at select number of programs related to grant recipients and fields of interest to the foundation
  • Stays abreast of current developments in the fields of interest and in philanthropic trends and opportunities for collaboration
  • Builds database of like-minded funders and other entities
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Skills / Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 1+ year(s) of experience in non-profit or related field
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong self-starter with a driven approach
  • Excellent attention to detail, time management, planning and organizational skills
  • Refined critical thinking skills and a creative and highly collaborative approach
  • Brings urgency and commitment to excellence and continuous improvement
