Inner City Law Center (ICLC) is a nonprofit law firm on Skid Row in Downtown Los Angeles. We are looking for extraordinary people to help us end homelessness in Los Angeles. Founded on the fundamental principle that every person should always be treated with dignity and respect, ICLC fights for justice for low-income tenants, working-poor families, people who are disabled or homeless, people living with HIV/AIDS, and homeless veterans. Over the next six months, we will add about a dozen talented and diverse lawyers, paralegals, and other staff to our team so that we can serve more clients.
Position Description: ICLC seeks a talented full-time Staff Attorney to help expand our work by advocating for clients who are experiencing homelessness or at imminent risk of homelessness. This is an innovative project intended to leverage resources across the homeless services system to produce maximum impact for clients.
The Staff Attorney’s role will include legal work in a wide-array of areas, including landlord-tenant issues; citation defense; maximizing income through government benefits; limited immigration assistance; record expungement; credit improvement; debt reduction. Significant time may be spent participating in community legal clinics, community outreach events and/or developing partnerships with other homeless service providers.
Hiring Criteria: Commitment to ICLC’s mission and values. Understanding of the legal barriers confronting people experiencing homelessness and the potential challenges involved in serving this population. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to assume responsibility quickly and work independently and as part of a team. Ability to interact with a wide range of clients in a kind, appropriate, client-centered manner. Applicants should have 1 to 6 years of experience practicing law in one or more of the legal areas set forth in the position description. Attorneys with experience in landlord-tenant law are especially encouraged to apply. Membership in the California Bar is required.
Compensation: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits.
