Job Description

 

The Removal Defense Staff Attorney will be based out of Al Otro Lado’s Los Angeles office and will represent detained clients in removal proceedings at the Adelanto Detention Facility in Adelanto, California. The Removal Defense Staff Attorney will also handle cases for non-detained clients in removal proceedings in Los Angeles Immigration Court. Frequent travel to Adelanto will be required (estimated 2-3 times per week). The Removal Defense Staff Attorney will work under the direct supervision of the Los Angeles Supervisory Attorney and Los Angeles Legal Director in collaboration with colleagues in the Los Angeles office.

 

JOB DUTIES

  • Representation of individuals detained in Adelanto Detention Facility (Adelanto, CA) in relief before the Immigration Court and Board of Immigration Appeals
  • Representation of individuals in removal proceedings in the Los Angeles Immigration Court
  • Representation of NQRP (Franco) Clients
  • Comply with data management and case tracking requirements
  • Administrative duties as needed

This is a full-time, salaried exempt position, available for one year with potential to extend depending on need and funding. Competitive salary and benefits.

 

QUALIFICATION AND REQUIREMENTS

The applicant must be licensed to practice law in any jurisdiction; California Bar preferred. Applicants should be dedicated advocates who are creative in their legal strategy and able to keep up to date with constantly changing immigration laws. Strong legal research and writing skills are required. Applicants should also have excellent interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively with clients, and an interest in working with marginalized populations and survivors of trauma. We are seeking applicants with a minimum of 1-2 years of immigration and/or criminal justice experience; we will consider immigration paralegal experience, organizing experience, and/or law school clinic experience. Applicants should be self-directed and self-reliant, highly organized, flexible, innovative, and able to work in a fast-paced setting with limited resources. Must be committed to immigrant rights and advocating for justice for and respectful of colleagues in a diverse workplace environment. This position requires regular travel to detention facilities.
