Job Description

SCPR is a national leader in public service journalism and civic engagement, producing more local news and public affairs programming than any other public radio station in the country. The Senior Vice President of Development ("SVP") has the exciting opportunity to partner with a new and visionary President and CEO to lead all fundraising efforts and to reinvigorate SCPR's $55 million capital campaign. This person will leverage the energy and excitement surrounding Herb Scannell's hire and be inspired and motivated to serve on the executive management team during this pivotal and exciting time of transformation and growth at SCPR. The SVP will also oversee annual development, drive campaign operations in partnership with the Board of Trustees, collaborate with senior leadership on strategic priorities for the organization, and manage a development team of twenty-two.

The SVP is responsible for developing the vision, strategies and tactics for all fundraising initiatives; and philanthropic fundraising for SCPR. The SVP is accountable for the leadership, management and successful achievement of the annual and long-term goals for the membership, major gifts, foundations and planned, annual fundraising events and corporate giving departments. The SVP is active in the community, building relationships with top donors and community leaders to advance the organizational goals and realize a new level of philanthropic success for the organization. CRM being a key part of our strategy to grow our audiences, the SVP will work closely with other key stakeholders to continue the development of a unified vision for the CRM system.

Key Responsibilities:

Fundraising Leadership

  • Determine and articulate the vision for all Development activities.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate annual and multi-year goals and strategies for the Development team and individual staff members designed to maximize financial support.
  • Develop and oversee the implementation of a comprehensive, diversified and integrated development process leading efforts to dramatically increase revenue.
  • Partner with the CEO to road map the philanthropic pathway for SCPR.
  • Create new strategies to increase and diversify revenue, including but not limited to an increase in number of both donors and giving per donor. Also maximize revenue relative to audience.
  • Oversee the development of strategic objectives to grow audiences and drive membership revenue from multiplatform activities.
  • Ensure all development strategies and work incorporate and maximize the use of CRM data.
  • Act as the champion for the optimized use of our CRM data and system.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and assess fundraising and gift-processing policies.
  • Ensure all development efforts are well-coordinated locally and with SCPR core services.
  • Serve as a staff representative to the SCPR board development, governance and capital campaign committees.
  • Manage select donor portfolio, including individuals, foundations and corporations.
  • Develop and sustain relationships with major donors; maintain and upgrade their financial support.
  • Cultivate, solicit and steward top prospects.
  • Oversee and strategize with President regarding his donor portfolio.
  • Build relationships with board members and strategize with board on ways to maximize their participation to advance the mission of SCPR.
  • Explore, research and plan new philanthropic opportunities.
  • Prepare oral and written reports to the Board of Trustees.

Management

  • Develop and participate in new strategic initiatives to further the success of SCPR.
  • Collaborate with division leaders on cross-department initiatives; serve as the liaison to other departments within the company.
  • Participate as member of senior staff team that supports the President and Board on development and implementation of strategic plan.
  • Directly work with the Board on recruitment and governance.
  • Prepare and monitor the annual development budget; oversee revenue and expenses, projections and forecasting.
  • Hire, supervise, train and manage direct staff through coaching, mentorship, performance meetings and on-going feedback.
  • Foster a creative and productive work environment. Lead and mentor the staff and regularly identify and recruit a diverse workforce for the Development Division.

Other

  • Coordinate with public broadcasting leaders: APM, NPR and other public broadcasting stations on best practices and opportunities for collaboration.
  • Collaborate with other department managers, both at SCPR and APM, on pan-organization issues.
  • Other special projects as assigned.

Core Competencies:

Inspired and driven by SCPR's mission and audiences, the SVP will be a collaborative, nimble and accomplished fundraising leader, working closely with the President and CEO and Board on envisioning and executing a strategic development plan aimed towards expanding SCPR's reach and impact. This leader will have a track record of success of building meaningful and trusted relationships with high-capacity donors in a sophisticated environment, deeply knowledgeable of the philanthropic community throughout the Greater Los Angeles region.

Successful candidates will have a minimum of 10 years of leadership/fund development experience, and a minimum of 5 years of management experience. The ideal candidate will have experience driving all major fundraising functions and strategy, cultivating and stewarding a portfolio of six-figure donors, leading capital campaigns, achieving aggressive annual fundraising goals, and collaborating and managing a team. A bachelor's degree is required, along with notable continuing education in the development and/or marketing fields; an advanced degree is preferred and/or CFRE or ACFRE designation preferred.

The ideal candidate will also have the following professional competencies and personal characteristics:

Strategic Leadership: The Senior Vice President of Development will be a strategic and visionary leader who can articulate and execute a vision for SCPR's current campaign and next fundraising chapter to internal and external stakeholders. This leader will have extensive experience in the strategic development of a major giving campaign and demonstrated successful execution of a campaign from launch to completion. This person will work with other senior leaders in the organization to ensure that SCPR's organization-wide strategic vision is reflected in its fundraising strategy. This entrepreneurial leader will have the ability to implement clear, action-oriented, innovative and bold fundraising strategies aimed at diversifying the organization's funding base.

Fundraising Expertise and Campaign Experience: This fundraising expert will bring a demonstrated track-record of accomplishments in fundraising and possess comprehensive experience in the development field, including membership, major gifts/principle giving, foundations and government grants, data management, budget administration, marketing, and communications. The SVP will drive the organization's ongoing $55 million capital campaign, bringing in fresh ideas and cultivating new donors to reenergize the campaign's efforts. The SVP will be a flexible and self-motivated team player who will strategically partner with and support the President and CEO, Board of Trustees, executive management team and development staff in identifying fundraising opportunities and strategies. With poise and gravitas, they will anticipate, understand, and respond to the needs of donors to meet and exceed expectations.  

Effective Management and Organizational Development Skills: The Senior Vice President will be responsible for managing the development, membership, and major gifts/institutional giving teams. This person will need to build relationships across teams and work collaboratively with people throughout the SCPR organization. The SVP will be a decisive, results-oriented leader with a collegial, team-oriented working style. They will have a proven record of visible and effective management and the demonstrated ability to build, nurture, motivate and retain a team of professional fundraisers that is focused on impact, excellence, accountability and efficiency. The SVP will empower and cultivate staff thorough active and effective communication as well as honest and constructive feedback and delegation. The SVP must have a high level of cultural competency and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.

Relationship Building and Exceptional Communication Skills: This leader will be a confident and articulate communicator with the ability to advocate for innovative content with a traditional donor base. The SVP will be a charismatic, high-energy leader who can connect and engage with all constituents and successfully convey SCPR's objectives and goals. The Senior Vice President will be skilled at building and sustaining excellent relationships at multiple levels with varied constituencies including members of the Board of Trustees, committees, donors, the executive team, development team, other staff members, and other radio professionals throughout the public radio community. With an inherent ability to listen, think, and respond effectively to a variety of inquiries and challenges, they will be able to remain firm and steady in delicate situations and in high-level strategic discussions.

Technological Savvy: The Senior Vice President of Development will harness the power of technology to streamline fundraising operations, identify new forms of donor engagement, and improve cross-organizational communications and practices. The SVP should have extensive working knowledge of Windows-based software and strong donor management software skills. The ideal candidate will be able to utilize the existing software, while exploring additional technological tools and instruments that better align with organizational best practices.
