Job Description

KIND seeks a full-time Pro Bono Coordinating Attorney in Los Angeles, CA to provide pro bono legal representation to unaccompanied children through KIND’s network of major law firms and corporate partners. Pro bono mentorship will include cases for children who have been released from ORR (Office of Refugee Resettlement) custody to caregivers in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. This position includes helping children understand the immigration process, and training volunteer attorneys to represent individual child clients effectively before immigration authorities to obtain relief, such as Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, asylum, T and/or U visas, and representation before California state courts. 

 

 PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Based in KIND’s Los Angeles field office, the Pro Bono Coordinating Attorney’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Match child clients with pro bono attorneys;
  • Recruit, train, and provide hands-on mentorship to pro bono attorneys representing unaccompanied children in immigration matters and related family law matters;
  • Develop and maintain updated guidance materials, sample filings, and legal training presentations;
  • Foster and manage KIND relationships with law firms and corporate counsel in coordination with the other legal services team members;
  • Assist with trainings and presentations;
  • Represent children in immigration removal proceedings, including children eligible for asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), T visas or U visas as needed;
  • File all relevant paperwork and applications with government agencies, immigration court, and state courts, where applicable;
  • Collaborate with KIND management in support of KIND’s mission;
  • Assist in office operations, including case management, data entry and maintenance, and reports; and
  • Participate in conferences, meetings, and trainings as needed;
  • Participate in staff meetings and KIND-wide calls; and
  • Serve as an ambassador of KIND with local coalitions, courts, and agencies.
 

 EDUCATIONAL & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS 

JD with two to four years of experience working in immigration law, which should include representation of clients in humanitarian immigration claims such as Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, asylum, U visas and T visas; state court experience in probate, custody, dependency, and/or delinquency is preferred.

 

 REQUIRED SKILLS 

  • Admission to practice law in the state of California;
  • Fluency in Spanish (preferred);
  • Experience working with children, preferably immigrant and refugee children, or experience working with survivors of abuse, human trafficking, or other trauma;
  • Experience in family law a plus;
  • Experience in direct representation of clients in immigration proceedings, including children or adults in ORR custody or Immigration detention;
  • A strong record of cultural responsiveness and cross-cultural communication skills;
  • An understanding of the private law firm and corporate pro bono culture and the ability to be a well-respected and effective representative of the program to all stakeholders;
  • Mentoring and training experience;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Excellent professional judgment;
  • Ability to hit the ground working, multi-task, and work independently; and
  • Ability to work collaboratively.
 

 SALARY RANGE   

Commensurate with education & experience.

 SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 

None  

 

WORKING CONDITIONS 

Work is generally performed within the office environment but may include attendance at court proceedings in Southern California as well as offsite client meetings.

 

 TRAVEL

Travel within great Los Angeles area may be required a few times per year.
