Job Description

The Teaching Artist YOLA (General Music and Choir), reporting to the Program Manager, YOLA at Torres, is responsible for beginning general music and choir instruction at YOLA at Torres. The Teaching Artist will ensure the highest quality learning experience for YOLA students, create curriculum, pedagogy, and lesson plans in collaboration with other YOLA music faculty, and support each child holistically. The employee will support the YOLA philosophy and community and help facilitate community and family involvement.

Hours for this position will be up to approximately 11 hours per week.

Position Elements:

  • Collaborating with YOLA faculty to create a shared curriculum and dynamic culture inspired by the ideals and philosophies of El Sistema
  • Instructing general music and choir classes of up to 20 elementary school students
  • Assisting with the creation of a general music, choir, and orchestral preparation curriculum
  • Communicating with YOLA academic tutors and parents to understand each child holistically
  • Attending music pedagogy and tutoring professional development sessions
  • Preparation and communication with other Teaching Artists, YOLA Conductor, Program Manager, and LA Phil staff
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements


  • Four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent experience required; post-graduate degree or equivalent experience a plus
  • Demonstrated excellent musicianship and artistry as a teacher/performer
  • Strong knowledge of standard music pedagogy with certification preferred
  • Experience teaching general music with elementary school students
  • Experience teaching utilizing conversational solfege and Kodaly methods
  • Strong knowledge of choral repertoire, curriculum and pedagogy
  • Strong commitment to El Sistema’s philosophy of social change through music
  • Experience working with children from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds; experience working in underserved communities
