Job Description

Behind every great cause is a great leader who needs more than heart to keep the lights on and the doors open. That’s why, at City Scholars® Foundation, we're on a mission to educate and empower nonprofit CEOs to lead well with limited resources, as they help thousands of low-income youth stay in school, out of trouble and on track to a brighter future.

To help fuel significant growth, we are currently recruiting for an ADMINISTRATIVE DIRECTOR with an entrepreneurial spirit to take charge of day-to-day program administration and business operations for the Foundation and our signature investment, the City Scholars® Fellowship. Target start date is late June/early July 2019.

As a high-impact, tuition-free leadership learning community, our Fellowship partners with executive volunteers to help nonprofit CEOs, who are distinguished as City Scholars® Foundation Fellows, build essential business and leadership skills, confidence and connections to grow after-school and school-based nonprofits from survival to success to significance. 

Together, our Foundation Fellows form a diverse, yet extraordinarily collaborative network of nonprofit CEOs, who currently lead 17 education nonprofits that each year help more than 46,000 predominantly low-income youth throughout the five-county Greater Los Angeles region achieve against the odds in school and in life. Learn more at www.cityscholars.org


Our ADMINISTRATIVE DIRECTOR must enjoy working in a small (currently 3-person), entrepreneurial, business professional environment that is mission-focused and impact-driven. He/she will work closely with our Board of Directors (reporting directly to our Founder & President who serves as a salaried board officer); and will, with the support of interns and volunteers, manage a diverse portfolio of priorities and projects for:  

·                    Program Administration

·                    Event & Meeting Coordination

·                    Executive Volunteer & Corporate Partner Engagement

·                    Strategic Communications

·                    Business Operations

Our ADMINISTRATIVE DIRECTOR will help us build (and lead) the team, infrastructure and campaign we need to support our City Scholars® Fellowship community as it continues to grow. We are specifically committed to expanding our Fellowship community from currently 17 nonprofit CEOs to 30 or more by our 30th Anniversary (January 2023). With an ADMINISTRATIVE DIRECTOR on board, our Founder & President can devote more energy to educating and empowering our City Scholars® Foundation Fellows, as nonprofit CEOs, and engaging increased support for our Annual Campaign and Endowment Fund (launched December 2018).  


·        wholeheartedly embraces our mission, can think BIG while implementing with excellence day-to-day; and, is confident interacting with and enjoys supporting high-impact corporate and community leaders. 

·        has earned a BA or BS degree (required), possesses relevant leadership and professional experience preferably in the philanthropic or nonprofit sector (minimum 5 years or more with event coordination experience a plus); and, is highly-organized, detailed-oriented, resourceful, tech savvy and proficient with Microsoft Office. Proficiency with SurveyMonkey, SalesForce (or other CRM), WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite, Quickbooks and various social media is a major plus.

·        is a team builder who can engage, manage and motivate current interns and office/event volunteers, as well as future administrative staff.


·        has excellent written, verbal communication and presentation skills along with the ability to successfully and simultaneously manage multiple priorities and projects from conception to completion (required).

·        is flexible and excited to learn, has strong analytical and problem-solving skills; is committed to getting details right; and, is as comfortable interacting with executives as he/she is picking up lunch for a meeting or water from the drugstore, if necessary.

·        possesses the poise, professionalism and confidence to represent the Foundation well at Fellowship, Foundation and community events.  

·        is able to lift 20 pounds, if necessary for event set-up (required); and, possesses a valid driver’s license and reliable and appropriately registered transportation (required). 

Nothing in this position description restricts the Foundation's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities of this position at any time.

COMPENSATION: $50,000/year (full-time, salaried, exempt). With tenure and exceptional performance, our ADMINISTRATIVE DIRECTOR will have opportunities for expanded leadership and compensation.  


Benefits include:

  • 4-day work week (Monday - Thursday) to promote healthy work-life balance. Our office is closed on Fridays. However, our ADMINISTRATIVE DIRECTOR may occasionally need to represent the Foundation at business/community events and meetings that are held on a Friday.
  • Employer contribution to group health and SIMPLE IRA retirement savings plan
  • 10 paid holidays (13 paid holidays after three years)
  • Parking/public transportation reimbursement up to $5/day

Our Administrative Director position is classified as full-time, salaried, exempt.
