The Director of Elections will lead Courage Campaign’s work to elect progressive candidates in California. This will involve developing and executing a strategy for recruiting, advising, and endorsing candidates who are running for open seats or challenging incumbents (particularly Democrats) that are failing to accurately represent their constituents, especially in the California Legislature.
You will also oversee voter mobilization strategy for our endorsed candidates and ballot measures. In 2018, Courage Campaign called 400,000 voters and texted 400,000 voters in California House races, primarily targeting young people, people of color, and self-identified progressives. This mobilization helped fuel a Democratic wave that ushered seven California Republicans out of office. In 2020, we have increased our goals to 1,000,000 calls and 1,000,000 texts.
Courage Campaign works in deep collaboration with allies, so a critical piece of the work will be coordinating our programs and analysis with those of partner organizations.
MUST HAVES ( Work, volunteer, academic, and life experience are all acceptable) :
● Extensive experience (ideally more than five years) working in electoral politics, including direct experience with candidate campaigns
● Deep interest in and knowledge of California politics and the progressive landscape, particularly at the state level
● Experience in and commitment to intersectional organizing, bringing a strong equity lens to all aspects of the work
● Experience with modern voter mobilization methods, including peer-to-peer text messaging, calling programs, and social media tools
● Strong written and verbal communication skills
● Sharp strategic instincts, analysis, and judgment
● Ability to work well on a team with both colleagues and partners
● Ability to navigate complex partner relationships and agendas while collaborating toward shared goals
● Experience managing complex projects from start to finish, independently and as part of a team
● Passion for progressive politics and social justice and interest in a broad set of issues
● Strong work ethic and a marked ability to produce work independently
LOCATION: California or willing to relocate to California. Courage is a "virtual office," so most employees work from home. Access to a shared co-working space can be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.
PAYMENT AND SCHEDULE: Pay for the Director of Elections will be between $72,000-88,000. This is a full-time, exempt position. Courage’s primary office hours are Monday through Friday, 9am-6pm PT. Hours are ideally worked within that time frame, but the schedule is flexible and changes can often be accommodated.
