Today, Farm Sanctuary is the nation’s largest and most effective farm animal rescue and protection organization. We have rescued thousands of animals and cared for them at our sanctuaries in Watkins Glen, New York; Northern California (Orland); and the Los Angeles area. Farm Sanctuary employs nearly 100 staff members at its animal shelters and administrative offices in New York and California and in remote office locations across the country.  The Director of Human Resources reports to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and is responsible for ensuring that the overall administration, coordination, and evaluation of human resources plans and programs are realized. The Human Resources Director, in partnership with the CAO, will enhance and administer human resource policies, goals, objectives, programs, and best practices for the organization. This proactive, hands-on, and customer service-driven individual will be tasked with evaluating and implementing employee programs, recommending improvements to policies, and ensuring that these policies align and are administered in alignment with organizational values. Responsibilities Oversees recruitment efforts for all personnel, including writing and strategically placing job descriptions and ads, candidate due diligence, and supporting hiring managers throughout the interview, offer, and onboarding process Works with departmental leadership to assess need for volunteers and interns and leads and/or supports components of the recruitment and on-boarding process Develops, updates, and recommends personnel policies and procedures, and educates management and staff about the personnel policies and procedures Works with senior leadership and staff to ensure Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion values, principles, and goals are incorporated throughout the HR department’s activities Effectively handles employee relations and engagement issues and provides appropriate level of coaching and counseling to resolve conflicts. Regularly identifies trends in active and terminating employee feedback. Recommends and leads solution-focused and/or improvement conversations with managers and senior leadership on retention matters In partnership with managers and senior leadership, manages performance management; monitors performance evaluation programs and process; recommends changes and/or improvements and leads training and related communications and discussions In partnership with managers and senior leadership, identifies staff training needs and opportunities for staff development, and procures appropriate training and development resources Maintains compliance with federal, multi-state and local laws. Works in partnership with legal counsel, payroll provider and other experts to ensure adherence to applicable regulations including FLSA, FMLA, COBRA, ADA, EEO, OSHA, etc. Maintains records, reports, and logs in accordance with applicable laws Conducts annual salary surveys Performs benefits administration Oversees exit interviews Maintains personnel records and other department records and reports Maintains the company directory and other organizational charts Qualifications Five to seven years of experience as an HR Generalist/Manager; experience with employee relations, recruiting, and performance development preferred Bachelor’s degree in human resources or a related field; Master’s degree in human resource management preferred; professional HR certification a plus Demonstrated knowledge and expertise with HR practices and principles; understanding of applicable state and Federal law; experience working in a multi-state environment helpful Must have highly effective interpersonal and written communication and organizational skills demonstrated by a positive attitude and interest in providing exceptional customer service to all of our on- and off-site staff Proven ability to make connections with staff, establish trust, and maintain confidentiality Demonstrates effective use of active listening and questioning skills and displays openness to other people’s ideas and thoughts Skilled at balancing complex situations, takes time to think through processes and competing priorities Demonstrates an unwavering commitment to ethics to help attract top talent while safeguarding Farm Sanctuary’s mission Demonstrated skills and experience with Microsoft applications, including Word, Excel and Outlook, and active knowledge of human resource-related tools and applications Demonstrated interest in Farm Sanctuary’s mission and campaigns Job Specifications Full time, exempt position Position is based in Farm Sanctuary’s Los Angeles office Ability to choose to work Eastern or Pacific Standard Time business hours (6am/7am-2pm/3pm PST to align with East Coast leadership)   Benefits Competitive benefits package, including paid holidays; personal days; vacation and sick leave; health, dental, vision, and life insurance; 403(b) plan; flexible spending accounts; and long-term disability insurance
