Job Description:

Director of Marketing and Communications

NHF recently underwent a re-branding and is looking to increase awareness of its programs among southern Californian communities, potential program partners and prospective supporters and donors. They are seeking a highly motivated communications and marketing professional to further develop and refine their message/brand, track news that is relevant to NHF’s work, and maintain relationships with the right outlets to disseminate its messages.
 
Responsibilities and Initiatives
In order to help NHF meet its growth goals, they are seeking a Director of Marketing and Communications who will:
 
  • Track related news locally and nationally and communicate highlights to the staff and leadership
 
  • Develop, implement and evaluate NHF’s strategic communication plan across the entire organization in collaboration with senior leadership
 
  • Lead message development, media relations and branding efforts in support of NHF’s strategic direction and support NHF’s proactive communication and outreach
 
  • Track NHF’s work and develop creative, innovative communications opportunities related to the programs
 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with national and local journalists, bloggers and other influencers
 
  • Manage media relations activities, including: identification of news opportunities and feature story ideas, writing news releases/media advisories, pitching to targeted media, responding to media calls, etc.
 
  • Widely disseminate information about NHF’s work to various, diverse audiences including but not limited to the advocacy community, elected officials, the legal community and the grassroots
 
  • Write and oversee production of collateral materials such as brochures, newsletters and special reports for various purposes and provide content for website and social media pages
 
  • Provide communications support to fundraising activities
 
  • Supervise assigned staff and outside service providers including graphic designers, freelance writers, photographers, video producers, among others
 
 

Job Requirements:

Requirements
The ideal candidate will be a pro-active, organized, versatile communications expert with a track record raising an organization’s media profile and safeguarding its brand equity. S/he will meet the following basic requirements:
 
  • Bachelor’s Degree (Communications, Public Relations or related field)
 
  • Graduate level degree (preferred, but not required)
 
  • 5 or more years of experience in communications, marketing, public relations and/or media work with nonprofit organizations
 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic communication plans, craft messages, and execute tactics
 
  • Ability to anticipate needs and plan accordingly; coordinate complex activities; prioritize conflicting demands and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
 
  • Knowledge of website, social media, and emerging media platforms
 
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative
 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
 
  • Ability to support organizational goals, structure, and dynamics
 
  • Ability to exemplify and promote flexibility and adaptability with programmatic and fiscal changes
 
  • Provision of own transportation; valid California driver’s license; automobile insurance
