Job Description:

We're seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and collaborative leader to direct the Center’s marketing and communications efforts, spearhead public education initiatives, and advocate on behalf of women in the community.  This full-time position is an integral part of DWC’s leadership team and is responsible for identifying and engaging in public outreach and advocacy opportunities, developing and overseeing public education projects, and building and maintaining clear and consistent messages on behalf of the Center through communications materials, newsletters, speaking engagements, and DWC’s website and social media presence.  An ideal candidate will have the chance to make a direct and significant impact on the downtown Los Angeles community, promoting DWC’s successful service model and furthering public awareness and action. This position reports directly to Chief Development and Communications Officer and supervises a team of up to three direct reports and/or interns.


WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Increase the visibility of DWC and convey the importance of our mission to the community
  • Collaborate creatively with department leaders to craft an annual communications plan and execute communications and marketing strategies for the organization as a whole, along with its various public education, fund development, social enterprise, and policy efforts
  • Develop key messages to effectively tell the Center’s story to diverse audiences
  • Manage all organization communications to ensure consistent messaging and branding is used to create momentum, increase awareness, and engage donors and other stakeholders in the work of DWC; test the effectiveness of these communications efforts
  • Design and direct overall strategy and creative development of print and digital materials, including promotional, informational, outreach, and educational publications and collateral materials
  • Write and edit copy for all forms of communication
  • Creatively leverage web-based and social media technologies to engage audience segments and lead to measurable action; oversee development of updated DWC website
  • Develop and implement media plans; write and distribute press releases, place stories, and arrange media events
  • Provide media and advocacy training for staff/participants, as needed
  • Monitor and analyze policy actions and initiatives related to the work of DWC; work with Board and staff to develop organizational policy positions
  • Advocate on behalf of the Center and its participants, promoting the best interests of low-income and homeless women in the community by managing outreach to and relationship-building with elected officials, providing testimony at local government and neighborhood council meetings, and facilitating DWC’s participation in community coalitions and taskforces
  • Oversee public education program, including giving and/or preparing leadership staff for presentations and lectures, facilitating workshops and discussions throughout the community, and handling general inquiries from students, researchers, and media who contact the Center
  • Work with Development staff to conceive, plan, execute, and evaluate solicitations and events for donors, volunteers, and other community members; utilize solicitations and events to reinforce the branding and positioning of DWC with various constituencies
  • Provide strategic insight and updates on marketing, communication, and branding to organization leadership team; position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels

Job Requirements:

THIS COULD BE A GOOD MATCH IF YOU HAVE...

  • 5-10 years of progressively increasing responsibility in communications, marketing, and/or public policy, including staff supervision, required
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s in Communications, Business, Public Administration, or Public Policy preferred
  • Proven ability to identify and analyze marketing, communications, and advocacy opportunities and challenges, as well as demonstrated experience implementing responsive strategies
  • Highly collaborative style a must; a relationship-builder who can bring people together and possesses the flexibility and finesse to “manage by influence”
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills and meticulous attention to detail required
  • High energy, maturity, and leadership needed
  • Strong organizational skills and experience managing large-scale projects – including timelines and budgets – required
  • Experience in creating and managing websites, social media platforms, and Constant Contact, and proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative suite required; design and/or content management experience a plus

SCHEDULE & SALARY:

This is full-time exempt position. Office hours are 9:00am to 5:30pm, with flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Salary: $70,000-80,000 annually, depending on qualifications and experience.
